I recently launched a comic making course on how to make comics. The first webinar is free and the feedback so far has been awesome.<br />
<br />
There is something so satisfying about delivering value - things that people enjoy and benefit from. I never understood when I was younger why someone would want to be a teacher. But now I think it is possibly one of the best jobs in the world - provided you have motivated students who want to learn.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Anyway, I digress, but if anyone want to get free material on how to make comics, here's a link<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFI6VkB7fwDE1qE14KHWUSe9e9AxOM2_DXlIOKWF1jqqhskZTrJJeBY2_s-AYkUN7SFcGwr-DXvn8DWFqVcicLNeI7r2KGngvMNjGHCe07jF2XkSZcr5BDrxTwJrew06pWRGSNSbiCO9JP/s1600/VarnaDragons.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFI6VkB7fwDE1qE14KHWUSe9e9AxOM2_DXlIOKWF1jqqhskZTrJJeBY2_s-AYkUN7SFcGwr-DXvn8DWFqVcicLNeI7r2KGngvMNjGHCe07jF2XkSZcr5BDrxTwJrew06pWRGSNSbiCO9JP/s1600/VarnaDragons.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
So every convention I go to, I get asked where I get my ideas from. I think it's a question most writers get asked a lot. The truth is I just make them up in my head, but they do usually start with something I see or hear. People seem to think that it's hard to come up with ideas, but I don't think it is. I do think it is useful to have a few constraints so you are not overwhelmed by having infinite options. I think that's why some people get writer's block.<br />
<br />
If the con is a little quiet, I demonstrate the constraint theory by asking the questioner to come up with a name, a phrase, a location, an occupation and an object. I then have 5 minutes to come up with a decent story for them. I did 3 stories at Liverpool comic con this past weekend and I am sure I will do more at Birmingham comic con next weekend. I give the handwritten stories as a souvenir and I like to think it makes the con more memorable for them. HOWEVER, my daughter is a whole different kettle of fish.<br />
<br />
Every morning I take my daughter to nursery and EVERYDAY she asks me for a story about good dragons and bad dragons. I like to think I can write quickly, but I am seriously tapped out on dragon stories!<br />
<br />
So if anyone has any ideas for dragon stories, please write in and tell me. I never believed in writer's block, but after 5 weeks of good and bad dragon stories, I am a sufferer.<br />
<br />
<br />

Staring at my screen for hours and several trips to the post office and I am still not close to sending out all the books I need to! I thought I'd share a little video on setting up a kickstarter - just be warned. You might get what you wish for and have to send books out to everyone!!<br />

Thanks to everyone who supported the Theatrics kickstarter!</div>

I thought I'd share something I came across which I found powerful. I think it is a very nice way of providing the best service for customers. Used it in a meeting recently and it worked for me!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZh29d09Wu_MqywVHQTtlMBBa5ytj5hqrA3c9tKu8o-IZbxX_Y5meNm9-ftQW3guxwJsGnd4KN1JWpJ1LZ5kHbvL5ytUPvfLyIr4xT43QBR0hRLhonABvn_MSkcPU54tXL4YJjXUju_3nq/s1600/selling.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZh29d09Wu_MqywVHQTtlMBBa5ytj5hqrA3c9tKu8o-IZbxX_Y5meNm9-ftQW3guxwJsGnd4KN1JWpJ1LZ5kHbvL5ytUPvfLyIr4xT43QBR0hRLhonABvn_MSkcPU54tXL4YJjXUju_3nq/s1600/selling.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
9 steps to selling from Dr. Demartini.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Step
One: Greet and Introduce</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Demartini
says that the first step in sales is to introduce yourself properly. Let people
know who you are and briefly what you do. Then, always ask a question. Sales
are about what clients or customers need, not what you can sell them. The key
throughout this process is to ask questions. "To sell is not to
tell," says Demartini. "If you start by telling a client about your
product, you're trying to make him or her do something that you want. This does
not plug into the client's motivation, which is to gratify his or her own
values"<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Step
Two: Create Rapport</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"The
next step is to establish common ground. People tend to forget the elementary
stuff," says Demartini. "Ask questions until you find common threads.
The point of this exercise is not to hurry a sale, but rather to establish a
platform on which to build a relationship. People tend to be skeptical until
you find commonalities," he says. "If you can find something that
connects the two of you, you stop being a stranger. Ask them about their
interests, try and find people you know in common, places you have both been
to, what they do, their goals and needs. If you can establish similarities,
they will open to you. That's when people see that you care. You can't
effectively sell to people who don't feel cared about."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"Remember
this tip, if you go in high and arrogant, your client will bring you down. If
you go in low and humble, they'll lift you up."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Step
Three: Establish Needs</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"Next,
find out what the client's needs are. This is the most important component of
the process. It's all about data collecting," says Demartini.
"The more needs you can establish, the easier the selling process will be.
If what you are trying to sell to them does not speak to one of their needs,
why would they buy from you?"<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"Where
people blow it in sales is they want to talk about the product," says Demartini.
"Again, ask, don't tell. You need to find out what is going to make a
client buy. Ask the right questions and they will tell you about their voids or
concerns"<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Demartini
references one of his mentors, Walter Haley of K-Mart. Haley referred to a
"dominant buying motive", but he calls it the clients' highest value.
He says that you need to establish as many needs as possible. Don't stop until
you have a minimum of five to seven needs, motives or voids that they want to
fill. "Walter Haley said that until they are asking you to help
them, you haven't established enough needs," says Demartini. "The aim
is to get to the point at which the client wants to know more about what you
can offer them."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Step
Four: Confirm Needs</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">He
points out that up until this stage all you have done so far is ask questions -
"You still haven't made a single statement making it feel like the client
is doing all the talking, is in control of the conversation and making all the
decisions," he says. However, it is you, the sales person, who is
actually directing the conversation by probing. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"Now
summarise your client's needs as it's vital to show that you have properly
understood them. When you have their confirmation, then you can make an
offer," says Demartini.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Step
Five: Now Offer a Solution</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">First,
a warning: "If what you are offering doesn't match the client's need,
you'd be a fool to offer it," says Demartini. "You'd be better off
not trying to make that sale and finding someone who does match the offer. At
his point you have to consider the long-term, rather than about your immediate
goal to make a sale. The short-terms costs, the long-term pays," he says.
"If you go for the sale and the product you are offering doesn't solve the
client's needs, you will undermine the potential referrals that the client
might still give you. Don't make them resent you."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"Either
find a way to give them a product that matches or you can simply loop back to
step three and establish a new or different set of needs. I often say to clients
who want to come to a particular programme of mine that the course I'm running
at this time may have less value for them than another I am doing in a few
weeks. Their needs must be congruent with the product or service or they will
not be satisfied."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"At
this point, to make a sale, you have to be clear about your intentions. Admit
that you want to do business. Let them see that you're interested. The
solution, as always, must be a win-win. Help them to get what they want, and
you'll get what you want," he says. "Either they'll come back to you
or they'll refer you to someone who needs what you're offering."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Step
6: Handle Objections</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"This
stage is inversely proportional to how well you established their needs,"
says Demartini. "Objections are symptoms that you have not established
enough needs and are not offering the service that matches their needs. Once
again, listening to the client is central and your preparation and product
knowledge will be key to your success. If and when objections come up, you may
need to skip back to step three and four, establishing and confirming needs, as
well as identifying new needs. This is also an opportunity to try step five
again," says Demartini. "Once all objections are taken care of, it's
time to close the deal." <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Step
7: Close</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"Be
clear and direct about your intention to close - don't make it ambiguous. Ask:
When would you like to fulfill your needs or objectives?" says Demartini.
But he points out that once again, this is a question. You're not imposing
terms on the client, but allowing the client to direct you - the decision is in
the client's hands and he or she is made to feel in control of the decision.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Step
8: Referral</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">"Once
you have the paperwork done, you have served your client," says Demartini.
"Then ask them if they would mind your asking one or two more questions.
Do they know other people with the same needs as theirs? At this stage of
the process, remember that you still have to keep in mind what is in it for the
client. If it's of no benefit to them, why would they do it?" asks
Demartini. "The client always wants to know what's in it for them.
Generally, when clients feel good about a product or service, they'll give you
references."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<strong><span style="color: #05213d; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;">Next
9: Continued service and follow-up.</span></strong><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 8.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

Final part of Charlie Brooker's interviews with great writers<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
My notes on this section:<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>2nd and 3rd drafts are much easier. The first is the hardest. Some people do 20 drafts!</li>
<li>A lot of what you write will be binned, but you have to ignore that.</li>
<li>You have to re-write and re-write. You're honing it each time and making it sharper each time. </li>
<li>People don't seem to like writing!</li>
</ul>
<br />
Watching this reminded me of a great quote by Steven King. He said that 'with the first draft you are telling yourself the story, with the second, you are telling others'. Now I'm paraphrasing here - I don't know his quote directly, but it was a very useful thing to hear.<br />

Part 4 of Charlie Brooker's interview with top screenwriters<br />
<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/00Vf7_Eheko" width="480"></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
My notes from this clip:<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Avoid exposition in dialogue - "i'd rather be confused for 10 minutes than bored for 5 seconds"</li>
<li>If you want to see an example of goos stage direction, read the screenplay for Ultimate Force. I tried to find a link to it, but couldn't! Might want to try the script for Lethal weapon</li>
<li>Action direction is important, but don't make it lengthy. The action directions should be as exciting as the story.</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Someone once pointed out to me that in supermarkets it should be '10 items or fewer', not '10 items or less'. Once you see an error like that, it sticks out. It's the same with bad dialogue. After watching this clip, bad dialogue in the future will stick out like a sore thumb. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Soooo, if you are a writer, it's a great thing. If you're not, you might not want to watch!</div>

More tips from some famous writers!<br />

<br />
<br />
My notes from this clip:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>How do you avoid cliches for stock characters? Well, sometimes cliches are great because they are funny.</li>
<li>When creating characters you can base each character of 3 or 4 people. Usually people you know, but you can base them on actors </li>
<li>Once you pick an actor that matches a character perfectly, you can read with lots of other actors to see who gels. [They did this on Twilight after casting Kristen Stewart.]</li>
<li>A technique for writing dialogue is to write it, then keep removing words. As long as it still makes sense, remove dialogue until it is as tight as it can be</li>
</ul>
