What I learnt from the TED talk by Julian Friedmann

First of all he may know good stories but that doesn't make him a good storyteller! :)

But here are my notes:

  • The protagonist must experience pain because it allows the audience to connect with the character. Once the writer has got that emotional connection, he/she begins to have some control.
  • Then you can put the character into worse and worse situations and because of the connection, the audience begins to feel fear.
  • When you release the character from the jeopardy they are in, the audience experiences a catharsis.
  • Even Beethoven used his music to tell a similar plot.
  • We believe what we see, not what we hear - show don't tell. Also it's good to have something said, but that is contradicted by what we see.
  • American movies have 2/3rd the dialogue of European ones and the scenes are half as long.
  • If you cut out the beginning and end of every scene (except the critical bits) audiences PREFER it because they have to think a little to fill in the gaps and are active, not passive.
